2001: A Space Odyssey - Motion Picture
Soundtrack
Long before Star Wars,
Star Trek
or any other outer space adventure, there was 2001.
This vivid, technically superior and dark tale of mankind, evolution,
intelligence on many levels and the unknown remains a timeless classic,
neither touched by time nor (for want of a better term) space. Packed
with almost 79 minutes of audio, this comprehensive glimpse at the soundtrack
to the definitive space film is a phenomenal trip. This is what a film
soundtrack should be all about, encapsulating moods, atmospheres and emotion
in the flux of subtle and explosive orchestral moments. It's irrelevant
that the music used in this astonishing film consisted of existing material.
In fact, it further substantiates the cinematic-audio genius of director
Stanley Kubrick
and his vision, finding such appropriate music to enhance his masterpiece.
The signature Richard Strauss composition,
Also Sprach Zarathustra has become a tune synonymous with outer
space. Besides the other amazing classical pieces like the Blue Danube
(also by Strauss)
or Adagio's
Gayane Ballet Suite, the absolutely haunting Gyorgy
Ligetti vocally prominent Soprano &
Choir piece encapsulates the moments perfectly. The choice of music
lends a galactic, brooding sweep, but also adds to the timeless quality
of the film - a synthesized "space aged" soundtrack would've dated it
5 years after its release in 1969. This 1996 EMI/TCM CD release
contains additional audio material from the movie including pivotal dialogue
segments that really suck you into its drama. The sleeve contains a wealth
of information on both the production and the soundtrack with quotes enlightening
many points. From start to finish this soundtrack leaves its listener
in an absolute state of awe. And if you hadn't heard this soundtrack or
even seen the film, all I can say is, do yourself a favour…
