DIE KRUIS - Begrawe Jou Engele Never before has Afrikaans
music dared to tread this kind of ground. No, it's not in the idiotic
league of racial snot like Shane Sies Jou Vark. This dark production
is a one-man project delving into disturbing issues, dealt with in a hard,
gothic metal style with many industrial and electronic elements, beats
and loops, elevating it from a blatant doom & gloom filled morose set-up.
The lyrics will flare some noses, but that is exactly the point. In general
Afrikaans music is expected to be crap (Jurie Els, Patricia Lewis…),
or stupid (Stoutgat Treffers) and never tread the ground of subversion,
religious issues and the inviting lure of the dark side - with music and
production to match. Some may think this is Satanic and can corrupt
youngsters, but even if it is so clear cut, great! This surpasses almost
every Afrikaans album produced in this country (with combined lyrics,
music & artwork) and should be checked out for its varied merits and not
the novelty of never having been done here before. It also features some
epic guitar from Springbok Nude Girl Theo and doomy bass by Paul
from F8. The unbalanced scale of bonehead Afrikaans music is starting
to swing from the boring Worsie Visser style, through the cool
and acceptable Valiant Swart terrain to the unexplored end where
Die Kruis is almost the only representative. Get educated. - PB |
