THE MAESTRO The Maestro is a loving tribute to the cult classics of the past, but also an exploration into deep philosophical issues about the nature of art. The tale of a genius provoked and pushed into madness and beyond, The Maestro tells the story of Arun, a composer and conductor who tried to make it in Europe but has ended up teaching high society children in Thailand. For years, he has been composing a magnum opus, The Tongues of Angels, and dreams of premiering it under his own baton. The Covid crisis allows him to create an imagined utopia for gifted young musicians in the middle of nowhere, far from the pestilence and corruption of the outside world ... but things go horribly wrong. It is a work of transcendence, of wildness … and a touch of madness. Directed by Paul Spurrier BOOK NOW AT QUICKET Trailer: |

REZ METAL In this high energy documentary an unknown Metal band from a Navajo reservation lands the opportunity to record in Denmark with renowned Metallica produced Flemming Rasmussen. When Kyle Felter, the lead singer of I DON'T KONFORM sent out a demo album to Rasmussen, the Grammy Award-winner producer of Metallica, they never imagined themselves a few months later rehearsing with Rasmussen inside a hot hogan on a Navajo reservation before recording their debut album at the iconic Sweet Silence Studio in Denmark. While following the band's fairy tale journey, the documentary tells the larger compelling story of the rarely known heavy metal scene on Navajo reservations where many youths have grown disaffected as a result of endemic poverty and high rate of suicides. THE WHISPER OF THE MARIMBA The marimba is the bridge between Africa and Latin America. The sound of the wooden xylophone connects the present-day life on the Ecuadorian Pacific coast with its African roots. Hundreds of years ago, the marimba music came to Ecuador across the sea. Stormy drum rhythms and the gentle, undulating melodies remind us of the violence experienced during slave trade and colonial rule and also tell the story of the centuries-old musical resistance of the Afro-Ecuadorian community. In 2015 the marimba music has been declared as an UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. "The Whisper of the Marimba" portrays three generations of musicians who lay bare their worries and dreams as well as their unshakable trust in the power of art and music to nurture their identity and community. A story of losing memory and rewriting history... Directed by Greta-Marie Becker BOOK NOW AT QUICKET Trailer: |

1 2 4 7 The two artists, who met nine years ago in the complex cultural space ‘Banjul’, had a longing for each other, but they also had prejudices, so there was no chance to be together. Bora Ju, a gayageum player, has been active as a singer-songwriter as well as traditional music such as sanjo. In addition to performing with various musical instruments, she has continued on various stages by collaborating with dance, meditation, painting, and photography. Harpist Kihwa Lee, who has run ‘Banjul’ with her mother, collaborated with famous and unknown artists both at home and abroad, and it was a very natural thing to live. As the concert stage was reduced due to Covid 19, Kihwa Lee invited the performers to her house and started a YouTube channel called 'ZIPSUNI Live' and reunited with Bora Ju after 9 years. The two women form a duo called ‘1247’ and getting closer to each other as they learn the differences between each other's instruments. And they successfully complete their first offline performance at ‘Ghetto Live’, a hip concert hall in Seongsu-dong. Inspired by the enthusiastic response from the audience, '1247' plans to hold a second performance at the place where they first met, 'Banjul', and goes on a performance practice trip to Gangwon-do. Their music, which undergoes emptiness through learning and interprets this as artistic giving, takes root across the stage, the sea, the street and the living room. THE SILENT STAGE The music scene, which is always the first to shut down during earthquakes, mining disasters, terrorist attacks at home and abroad, came to a halt with the COVID-19 pandemic. Though perceived as only “entertainment”, music is an indispensable element of art and one of the essential things that bring people together. The music industry, which can be gathered under headings such as musicians, production companies, managing companies and concert venues, employs about 1 million people from waiters to security personnel, helpers to sound operators, backstage managers to the technical team, cooks to cleaners, secretaries to assistants in companies. The shutdown process that started before the pandemic has now entered an even more serious phase. During this time, many musicians have had to get by selling away their instruments while there have also been those who committed suicide. The musicians, who could not even pay their rent, had to leave the house they lived in, move to other cities, or return to their families abandoning their established way of life. The stories of the musicians, who could not receive short-time work allowance or unemployment pay, and other workers in the music industry are now featured in the documentary, The Silent Stage. The 25’ documentary "The Silent Stage" narrates what people in the music industry in Turkey have gone through during the pandemic, and an be ref;ected in any part f the world where musicians struggle. MUSIC AND MENTAL HEALTH Besides being a musical hotspot, Austin Texas is a city that recognizes mental health as an important issue and one that can be combated by spreading awareness. There has been a lot of talk about the effects of COVID-19 on people, including music artists and local business owners, and this film project happened to kick off as it gripped the world. The aim is to stomp out the stigma surrounding mental illness and making mental health a household concept that is no longer frowned upon. In this documentary independent artists share their talents and voices in more than one way, facilitating healing by sharing different aspects of their lives, through storytelling, which we hope will be appreciated by the community and their beloved fans. Filmmaker Tina Rix is a Nigerian American psychotherapist and a woman of the common everyday people and advocates for the marginalized, tormented, oppressed, and forgotten people. She is comfortable rolling up her sleeves and jumping right into any environment and learning from the cultures surrounding her. She believes in integrating the arts, mental health, systemic thinking, and social justice into all aspects of life. Directed by Tina Rix |

She refuses to let Aaron's lack of name recognition, jazz's dwindling fan base, or the 2020 global pandemic get in her way. As the pandemic rages, Yvette's schemes to keep Aaron's career afloat become increasingly convoluted, testing her abilities as an agent and her friendship with Aaron. Directed by Aaron Weinstein |

CALM BEFORE... THE RISING STORM One for vinyl collectors and Garage Rock fans. In June of 1967, a group of six high school seniors went into a tiny recording studio in Massachusetts and recorded an album called 'calm before...' that was to become a vinyl collector's classic in the decades to follow. The Rising Storm has survived to become one of the 'Unknown Legends of Rock n Roll' and five decades later, they are still making music. The boys graduated, and went on with their lives and successful professional careers that had nothing to do with music. The 500 copies of the album, never meant for distribution, fell into obscurity, until 1982, when a German collector paid $2,000 for a rare copy. Music reviewers and rock historians re-discovered "calm before..." calling the album an 'icon of the 60's garage band sound with surprising original material'. The album was 'bootlegged' in Europe and suddenly the band was unwittingly thrust back into the spotlight. In this 30 minute documentary, filled with animations, re-creations, and interviews with experts, fans, and band members we piece together the story of the Rising Storm's unlikely rise to fame. We explain what caused the craze among vinyl collectors and hear what the band has to say about the music they created fifty years ago, the times they lived in, their subsequent “fame” and their real lives. Directed by Andrew Brier |

SOUND OF REDEMPTION: The Frank Morgan Story Friday 26 August, 6:15pm BOOK HERE The late jazz saxophonist Frank Morgan's tale of redemption from drug addict, conman and convict to beloved elder statesman of jazz. Frank Morgan was a prodigal alto sax player who, like so many of his fellow musicians of the era, saw his career plagued by drugs and crime. What sets Frank apart is not just his exceptionally beautiful, classic alto playing, but also the amazing fact that he survived 30 years of revolving door incarceration and drug abuse and went on to a much heralded comeback career in the last 22 years of his life. His story is one of brilliant promise in his youth, a journey through the depths of hell, and redemption through his art. The documentary film tells the story of his life and transformation through interviews with fellow musicians and people who were close to him. These are intercut with footage of Frank, and tracks of his very emotional music. Holding the story together is footage of the preparation and performance of a tribute concert in a prison. The years Frank spent in San Quentin were significant because there were so many great musicians “in residence” there that the far-sighted warden of the time allowed them to form a big band, known as The San Quentin All Stars. People came from all around the Bay Area to hear them play. Directed by NC Heikin |

1984 - RIDING INTO HELL Saturday 27 August, 4pm BOOK HERE George Orwell may have predicted that in 1984 the world would be a colorless place where humans relentlessly bowed down to big brother, but 1984 Riding Into Hell finds a very different world than he'd predicted. The year is examined by taking a closer look at the American rock & roll scene, world news & politics, celebrities & pop culture, and technology. This rockumentray looks at that significant year in history via the rise and fall of Rock / Metal band FORCER. Before Metallica became a household name, thousands of Hard Rock / Metal bands in as many towns across America dreamed of Rock stardom, but not everyone can make it. This documentary takes you through Forcer's trials and tribulations in the fight for fame and fortune (with archivefootage and new interviews). But what makes this even more enlightening is the inclusion of news- and history making events, from the Reagan election, Cold War, introduction of the Apple Macintosh and Paul McCartney being bust for marijuana possession, to Richard Branson launching Virgin Airlines, the Union Carbide chemical disaster in India, Atari video games and classic TV ads from the era. Directed by Rudy Childs |

JIVING AND DYING : THE RADIO RATS STORY Saturday 27 August, 8:30pm BOOK HERE An enlightening look at a legendary South African rock band. In late-1970s South Africa, there was a song on the radio about a spaceman called ZX Dan. It was by Radio Rats, a noisy little band from Springs, near Johannesburg. That song and hundreds more songwriter Jonathan Handley has penned since then remain an important part of South Africa’s musical landscape. They influenced James Phillips (aka Bernoldus Niemand) who went on to initiate the alternative Afrikaans music scene of the mid-‘80s, the Voëlvry “movement”. Jiving and Dying is an attempt to afford the Rats the place they deserve in the history of independent rock ’n’ roll in South Africa. Directed by Michael Cross |

BLACKHEARTS Sunday 28 August, 6:15pm BOOK HERE BLACKHEARTS takes a fresh look at the notorious Norwegian black metal music scene – but from a striking new angle. The documentary travels to South America, Europe and the Middle East to follow three black metal diehards who hail from extreme religious and political backgrounds. Hector, Kaiadas and Sina are willing to risk alienation, imprisonment – even death – to play black metal and live by its ideology. They worship the Norwegian black metal music they have modelled their lives around. BLACKHEARTS takes its audience deep into the minds, hearts and private lives of its characters. It explores how a music scene develops across religious, cultural and political lines – and provides comic relief on the things humans say, think and do when hijacked by passion. Also features members from bands including Gogoroth, Immortal, Satyricon, Dark Throne, and music from Burzum, Keep Of Kalessin, Myrkskog, Gorgoroth, Manes. See this enlightening documentary's African premiere only at Sound On Screen. |

SOAKED IN BLEACH A full length documentary film about the death of Kurt Cobain Friday 31 July 8:30pm The Death Of An Icon Comes To Life Soaked In Bleach reveals the events behind Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain's death as seen through the eyes of Tom Grant, the private investigator that was hired by Courtney Love in 1994 to track down her missing husband only days before his deceased body was found at their Seattle home. Cobain's death shocked the world and music industry, and was ruled a suicide by the police (a reported self-inflicted gunshot wound), but doubts have circulated for twenty years as to the legitimacy of this ruling, especially due to the work of Mr. Grant, a former L.A. County Sheriff's detective, who did his own investigation and determined there was significant empirical and circumstantial evidence to conclude that foul play could very well have occurred. The film develops as a narrative mystery with cinematic re-creations, interviews with key experts and witnesses and the examination of official artifacts from the 1994 case. The screening will be preceded by live unplugged Nirvana performances, from local artists including A Murder (feat. members from A Murder, The Makabra Ensemble, Dawn Treader), Kevin Rule (With Dawn, V.O.L.) and JP Monroe (No. 15, Arc Reactor) Director: Benjamin Statler Written & Produced by: Benjamin Statler, Richard Middelton, Donnie Eichar (There will be DVD give-aways of the other Cobain documentary Montage Of Heck, courtesy Raru and Next) Cape Town Booking Stay updated & like: www.facebook.com/SoundOnScreenFilmFest |

WE ARE TWISTED F*CKING SISTER! Sunday 2 August 6:15pm The 10 Year Odyssey To Overnight Success A decade before their mid-80s "Stay Hungry" album (with hits like "We're Not Gonna Take It" and "I Wanna Rock") took the world by storm, legendary glam / shock rock / metal band Twisted Sister were rule breakers that no record company wanted to touch. While the biggest band in the Tri-State area, their image scared off record companies and break-out success kept eluding them even when selling out huge venues 5 nights a week. This eye-opening documentary tells this amazing story with full details from all the band members and those who were there across that tough and crazy decade of fighting for their music. Some considered Twisted Sister a joke, others called them the greatest bar band in the world. While Punk and New Wave took over New York City, Twisted Sister was battling their way to the top of a working class, suburban, cover-band bar scene - surrounding New York, yet existing in a parallel world. At its peak were monster clubs, packing in audiences of up to 5000 a night - both a great living and a dead end, offering little future outside the suburban enclave. That Twisted Sister would break out into multi-platinum stardom is well known, but this is no fable of fame and success, no litany of celebrity tributes and fanboy adulation. Rather a smart, savvy and wickedly funny story of a 10 year odyssey to overnight success. Directed by Andrew Horn Cape Town Booking Stay updated & like: www.facebook.com/SoundOnScreenFilmFest |

ART'S NOT DEAD Friday 31 July 6:15pm [ Pre- and post audience discussions by the makers and participants ] Art's Not Dead is a unique documentary-style music film that captures the "retirement" of a young Cape Town musician from his various bands and the music scene. In October 2010 drummer Artur Pereira announces that he is quitting music altogether, leaving his four bands in the process. As the bands prepare for a final farewell show, friends and band colleagues reflect on how he has impacted their lives and their music. The film offers a genuine insight into the relationships not only between band members, but between bands and their intertwined histories, and how one musician's actions reflect the greater sentiment of much of Cape Town's talented underground music community. The film also features live performances by Cape Town bands Coal, Andy Lund and the Mission Men, V.O.L., Three More White Guys and more... Featuring: Artur Pereira / Anton Marshall (Three Bored White Guys, Three More White Guys) / Andy Lund (Mission Men, Roswell Kings) / Sean Ou Tim - (Mr Sakitumi, The Makabra Ensemble, Max Normal, Closet Snare, Battery 9) / George Bacon (Hog Hoggidy Hog) / Sean Wienand (Headline Artists, Mercury Live) / Helen Westcott (Coal, I, Villain) / Kevin Rule (VOL, With Dawn) / Steve Smith (Three More White Guys, The Sunday Family) / Adam Hill (The Sleepers) / Nicolai Roos (The Sleepers) / Steven Gary Jacobsen (The Sleepers) Also performance appearances from George vd Spuy (Taxi Violence), Joshua Grierson, and others.
